My Philosophy

Whether I have the privilege of serving as your spiritual director, clinical supervisor, or workshop leader, I strive for you to feel that you can share your true self, without fear of judgement, and know that together we can work toward your goals.   

Many of us have never heard of Spiritual Direction, or aren't exactly sure what it is. In simple terms, as a trained Spiritual Director, I help you notice where God/the Divine may be working in your life. As described by author Teresa Blythe “Spiritual direction is a contemplative practice of examining and exploring one's spiritual path with a person trained in listening, discernment, and deep reflection." The image of three chairs is a commonly used metaphor to explain the practice of spiritual direction, given that it involves three entities: the spiritual director, the person seeking spiritual guidance, and God/the Divine. 

 If you are trying to become closer to God or discern what path God may be leading you towards, Spiritual Direction is a great place to start. Alternately, If you are in a place where you are struggling with your faith, whether because of difficult life experiences or because of teachings within your religion, Spiritual Direction is also a great place to explore these questions. On a personal note, I have sought spiritual direction when trying to discern next steps or explore difficulties I am having within my own faith life. Although I am open to providing spiritual direction to people of various faith backgrounds, I do identify as Catholic, and as a result Catholic spiritual practices are the ones with which I am most familiar. 

In a spiritual direction session with me, I will usually ask if you would like me or you to start us off with a prayer, and then I will ask you to reflect on where God may be moving in your life at this point. If you currently don't feel God's presence, as can happen to many of us in our faith journey, we can explore this as well. Throughout our session, I may invite us both into a short period of silence to allow the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to guide us. Spiritual direction usually takes place about once a month and is not a replacement for therapy. While a therapist's goal is to assess mental health symptoms and create a treatment plan to help address these challenges, a spiritual director's role is to create a sacred space to allow you the opportunity to explore and deepen your spirituality. In our supervision sessions, I draw from my experience providing bilingual individual, family and group therapy in a variety of settings including schools (elementary, high school, universities) health clinics and group private practices. I have been lucky enough to have incredible clinical supervisors and colleagues in New York, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Miami, and often consult with my network to help provide new social workers guidance and support. My multicultural background is an important part of my identity and I encourage social workers to reflect on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion within supervision. Finding the right clinical supervisor is an important step, so feel free to schedule a consult with me to see if we may be a good fit.
